Black text reads, 'Extra help for drug costs, Medicare program for people with limited incomes,' over blue yellow and green background. Able SC logo in the bottom corner. Features photo of two white seniors examining a bottle of pills.

“Extra Help” is a Medicare program to help people with limited incomes pay for their Medicare coverage and prescription drugs.

Individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions may benefit from enrolling in “Extra Help”. Prescription drugs using “Extra Help” are much more affordable. You’ll pay a maximum of $4.50 for each generic prescription drug, and a maximum of $11.20 for each brand-name prescription drug.

You will automatically get “Extra Help” if you have full Medicaid coverage, receive help from the State to pay your Part B premiums from a Medicare Savings Program, or receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits from Social Security. If you do not automatically qualify for “Extra Help”, you can apply on the Social Security website.

Or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. You can also contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to get free help with your application.

Able South Carolina staff are also available to assist in applying for “Extra Help”. To contact Able SC, call 803-779-5121. TTY: 803.779.0949.
