In short, The Employment First Initiative Act promotes inclusive employment for individuals with disabilities in South Carolina. People with disabilities make up a large part of South Carolina’s population; 1 in 3 South Carolinians has a disability. This includes physical, intellectual, psychiatric, hearing, and visual disabilities, and health conditions. There are many benefits in hiring people with disabilities from an individual, government, and business perspective, which you can learn more about on the www.HireMeSC.org website. Specifically, The Employment First Initiative Act (H.3244), a bill that has bipartisan support, would create a commission that would focus on goals that are necessary to increase competitive and integrated employment for people with disabilities. The commission would be charged with developing solutions to the barriers listed in the study committee report.
