Keep your community safe!
Updated COVID-19 Isolation Guidelines

If you have symptoms of sickness from COVID 19, you should take a COVID test to confirm if you have the virus or not. If you need a COVID test, please call the Disability Vaccine Access Hotline at 800-787-6046 to request a free text kit, today.

If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or have tested positive for COVID-19, you may feel unsure or confused about what to do. Thankfully the CDC has developed a tool to help you keep your community safe from COVID-19!

Visit the CDC's Isolation and Precautions page for the Isolation and Exposure Calculator. This tool will tell you if you need to isolate or take other steps to prevent spreading COVID-19.

Hear from someone who's used the tool:

"After a trip I was not feeling well. I took an at home COVID-19 test provided for free by the Disability Vaccine Access Hotline. When I got my positive result I used the CDC's Isolation and Exposure Calculator. I followed the guidelines the calculator gave me. By following the guidelines I was able to keep my family safe from COVID-19! I was the only person to get sick, and my husband, and two kids under 4 stayed healthy!"

If you do have COVID-19, please follow the instructions below for isolation until you are no longer able to spread the virus to others.

1. Day 0-5 after getting a positive COVID 19 test: Isolate

  • A high-quality mask should be always worn around others. A high quality mask can be a KN95, KN94, or N95 respirator type. You can find these types of masks in most drug stores. You can often order these types of masks for delivery.
  • If you can't wear a mask, do not go anywhere. Avoid being around others.
  • Do not travel.
  • Stay home and away from others.
  • If possible, use a separate bathroom from others.
  • Improve the ventilation in your home, if possible. Improving the ventilation means improving the air quality in your home. You can do this by using an air filter, a fan, or opening windows.
  • Do not share household items such as towels, cups, or utensils.
  • Pay attention to your symptoms and if you have trouble breathing or feel any distress, seek medical care immediately.

2. Day 6 after positive COVID 19 test having no – mild symptoms:

  • You can end isolation if symptoms improve;
  • And you are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication).
  • Continue to wear a mask until you get two negative COVID-19 tests taken 48+ hours apart.

3. Day 6 – 10 with moderate to severe symptoms:

  • You most likely need to isolate through Day 10.
  • Consult your doctor before ending isolation.
  • Moderate to severe symptoms can include fever, bad headache, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and other symptoms that make you feel bad.

4. Regardless of when your isolation ends:

  • Wear a mask until you receive two negative COVID 19 tests 48+ hours apart.
  • Avoid being around people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19.
  • Avoid places where you are unable to mask.
